What do buyers say? 90+ Home Depot reviewers rated this product 5 stars.

The Brookside Rollaway Bed (model BS04TTMFRB, to be exact) is convenient and comfortable. It's got a sturdy steel frame, a hammock-style base, and spring suspension, which takes the place of those uncomfortable crossbars found on most traditional rollaway beds. Dual-locking wheels make it easy to maneuver the bed while ensuring it stays in place through the night.

As for the mattress, you're looking at 4 inches of gel-infused memory foam that promises to conform to the body without making your guests overheat. That might seem thin for a mattress, but it's thicker than many rollaway style mattresses—and still easy to fold up in the morning. The bed weighs 40 pounds and has a 350-pound capacity.

Available in twin or extra-long twin, it's large enough for most adults and small enough that it doesn't take up much storage space when not in use. Though some assembly is required, the setup process is easy and doesn't require any tools.

What to Look for in a Rollaway Bed

Mattress

"In terms of getting a good night's sleep, the mattress should be at least 3 inches thick (most will be between 2 and 5 inches)," says Logan Foley, managing editor at SleepFoundation.org, explaining that the thicker the mattress, the more comfortable the bed will be.

Most rollaway beds come with memory foam, latex innerspring, or air mattresses. Memory foam and innerspring options tend to be a bit more comfortable, whereas an air mattress may be more convenient for storage.

Mattress Advisor performance editor and certified sleep science coach Barry Bridges recommends considering the preferred sleeping position of the person using it. "Memory foam and latex mattresses are more or less universal for side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers," he explains. "All-innerspring mattresses work well for back and stomach sleepers, but they might lack the pressure relief that side sleepers like me need…Air mattresses can be a problem for side sleepers too."

Ease of Storage

"Many rollaway bed frames fold in the middle," says Bridges. "For that type of frame, you'll definitely need a folding mattress if you want to store them together as a single unit." In any case, the frame should be sturdy but also easy to fold and unfold.

"Consider where you want to place your rollaway bed so you can determine what dimensions to look for," says Mattress Advisor staff writer Marissa Merkt. "This is especially important if you live in a small apartment or don't have a lot of space in your guest room." And while not all hideaway beds have wheels, casters can make them much easier to move around your home and stash away when not in use.

Weight

You should also consider the weight of the bed. "In general, rollaway beds should be lightweight," says Foley, explaining that this makes them easier to store. With the exception of Murphy-style queen beds, they shouldn't weigh more than about 50 pounds.

Additionally, Foley and Bridges both recommend looking at the weight capacity before buying any guest bed, especially a rollaway model. "Most of them should accommodate 200 to 300 pounds," says Bridges, "but someone who weighs more than 300 pounds will need a bed that specifically covers that higher weight range."

FAQ
  • What are the benefits of a rollaway bed?

A rollaway bed is a bed that can be folded and stored when not in use, and conveniently opened when guests arrive. Some rollaway beds have thinner frames and mattresses so they can be stored in a closet or in another narrow space. Others are stored in their own cabinets so they can be hidden when not in use. All rollaway beds are on wheels so they can be easily moved to where they are needed or stored.

  • What's the average mattress size for a rollaway bed?

Most rollaway beds come with a cot or twin-sized mattress. Cot size mattresses are typically 75 x 30 inches, accommodating only one person. They are sometimes referred to as a single-sized bed. Cot or single-sized beds are typically good for kids or smaller adults. If your guests need more room, you can also find plenty of twin or twin XL-sized options. Full and queen rollaway beds tend to be harder to find.

  • What is the average cost of a rollaway bed?

The average price of a rollaway bed is between $150 and $300. Rollaway beds with thicker mattresses and higher weight capacities will cost a bit more.
