What to Look for in an Oil Diffuser

There are two main types of oil diffusers: ultrasonic and nebulizing. Both versions create a fine mist, but they work a bit differently. Ultrasonic models—the cheaper option—create vibrations that break the essential oils down and distribute the individual molecules into the air. Nebulizing models distribute more potent, undiluted essential oils into the room by using pressurized air.

Capacity and time

Ultrasonic models require a mixture of water and essential oils, which allows them to run for longer—approximately 30 to 60 minutes at a time. Since nebulizing models use only essential oil, they should be run for shorter periods (about 10 minutes at a time).

Both types of models benefit from regular cleaning, but ultrasonic essential oil diffusers are more difficult to clean since they use both water and essential oils. Water makes the machine more susceptible to mold, and tap water can leave calcium deposits inside the machine.

  • How do you use an essential oil diffuser?

First, read the manual that came with your oil diffuser or watch a video produced by the company that made it, since instructions will vary. For an ultrasonic water-based essential oil diffuser, the process goes something like this: fill the tank with water, add the desired or required number of drops of oil in your chosen scent, plug it in, turn it on, adjust settings and/or timer, and you’re off.

  • How many drops of essential oil are in a diffuser?

The amount of essential oil drops that you use in a diffuser will vary according to the size and make of machine you are using, the size of your space, and your personal tolerance for whatever scent you are diffusing. Always consult your manual for specific instructions. In general, you will use 3 to 5 drops in a 100ml oil diffuser, with some larger models that run for several hours using up to 20-25 drops. It’s always advisable to start with fewer drops and to work up from there.

  • How do you clean an essential oil diffuser?

To clean your oil diffuser, first locate and read the manual that came with your machine, which will have specific care instructions that you should follow. It’s important to clean water-based oil diffusers in order to prevent mold, and both water- and oil-based diffusers in order to keep them running smoothly and to make sure that you remove any trace of one essential oil scent or blend before using another for the best experience.

In general, ultrasonic water-based diffusers should be rinsed clean after each use, and thoroughly cleaned around once a month to remove dust and build-up. To clean a water-based oil diffuser, unplug the device, empty the reservoir, clean the inside with a damp cloth dipped in natural detergent and water, and wipe dry thoroughly with a clean cloth. Next, remove any excess oil build-up from the ultrasonic chip that breaks down essential oils into base molecules before they are diffused using a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. To deep clean, empty the reservoir, fill it half full with water and 10 drops of vinegar, turn on the diffuser and allow it to run for 10 to 15 minutes to remove any oil build-up inside before unplugging it, emptying it, and drying it thoroughly. Then clean the ultrasonic chip with a cotton bud dipped in rubbing alcohol. Wipe down the outside of the machine with a damp cloth, reassemble, and it’s ready to go.

An oil-based diffuser should also be wiped down regularly to remove oil build-up, and you can add a few drops of rubbing alcohol and turn it on for 10 or 15 minutes for a deep clean.
